From April 14th,  local authorities in Wales must consider the policies in the Noise and Soundscape plan 2023 –2028  when exercising any function of a public nature that could affect soundscapes in Wales. The plan states "A healthy sound environment is more than simply the absence of unwanted sounds, and noise management must have a broader focus than simply reducing the decibels. " and "We need to create appropriate soundscapes, meaning the right sound environment in the right time and place." 

Changes to planning rules around air source heat pumps (ASHP), electric vehicle charging and home extensions are included in a consultation on extending permitted development rights (PDR) in England.  In our response, the IOA make the case for embedding acoustic considerations into the permitted development framework, to enable Government to support the wider rollout of sustainable technology while still safeguarding the health and quality of life of communities.
