Apprenticeship starts in the engineering and technology sector are 9% lower today than they were seven years ago. An inquiry to uncover the reasons behind this decline has been launched by EngineeringUK, the charity supporting young people into engineering. 

With a skills shortage and growing demand for engineers and technicians, the inquiry is looking to identify solutions for increasing the number and diversity of young people taking up technical apprenticeships. 

Stories of the impact noise has on day to day lives often make the news. This week as the BBC set out to investigate the ‘Holmfield Hum’, IOA Council Member and MD of Sustainable Acoustics, Peter Rogers was called upon to comment. The ‘hum’ is a low frequency noise that has been impacting a number of residents in the Yorkshire village since 2019, and the local authority have been unable to identify a source. Peter gives a clear explanation of how low frequency noise affects people differently, and the challenges of identifying a source. 

The Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill (REUL), currently progressing through parliament, seeks to revoke all EU laws retained post Brexit by 31st December 2023. Many regulations within the scope of this Bill affect noise and vibration management. The category of Retained EU Law (REUL) was created at the end of the Brexit transition period to encompass EU derived legislation retained in the UK. The REUL Bill is intended to enable Government to repeal and replace EU derived law easily.
