Bursary Fund

The IOA Council has allocated £10,000 to the Bursary Fund, which it aims to use in both improving IOA members’ access to acoustics related training and activities and also assisting them in carrying-out acoustics-related STEM activities, where funding from other sources may be limited or unavailable.

Short courses in acoustics available in 2021 in the UK

The IOA runs four short courses during the spring and autumn at accredited training centres across the UK. A list of Centres is at https://www.ioa.org.uk/education-and-training. Usually, the courses are for five days with written examinations on the last day (dates are listed below). Potential candidates need to contact the accredited centre to confirm availability and the timing of the course. Please refer to the Accredited Centres 2021 list below.

The STEM Ambassador Programme set to run an online virtual careers fair 1-5 March

From 1st - 5th March, as part of National Careers Week, the STEM Ambassador Programme is running an online virtual careers fair in partnership with Aecom. The event will be joined by over 22 national employers from a number of sectors from engineering to pharmaceuticals, and finance to research.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to be inspired and meet STEM Ambassadors from a wide variety of STEM organisations, with an exciting opportunity to chat live and ask their questions.

Make a sound career choice with new acoustics apprenticeship

A pioneering apprenticeship, designed to train the acousticians of the future, is planning to take its first intake of students later this year.

The Acoustics Technician Level 4 Apprenticeship has been developed as an employer-led, industry initiative, with support from the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) and the Institute of Acoustics (IOA).

It is hoped that the first students can begin their programme in September, developing their skills in a mix of workplace training, as well as study.

University announced as a consortium partner for the next generation electric aircraft

The University of Salford has been announced as a partner part of a seven-strong consortium who are developing the next generation of all electric propulsion module that enhances aircraft performance and reduces operating costs. The project brings together industry and academia with The University of Salford Acoustics Research Centre providing their expertise on noise modelling and assessment.

Open consultation: Night flight restrictions at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports between 2022 and 2024 plus future night flight policy

This is a two-stage consultation asking:

to maintain the existing night flight restrictions for the designated airports between 2022 to 2024 plus banning QC4 rated aircraft movements between 23:30 to 06:00
for views on policy options for the future night flight policy, beyond 2024, at designated airports and nationally

The designated airports are Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.
