Energy National Policy Statements (NPS) – originally published in 2011 - are being reviewed by government to ensure the planning policy framework supports the infrastructure required for a transition to net zero, as set out in the Energy White Paper in December 2020. The five statements cover overarching policy, infrastructure for natural gas, renewables, electricity generation and oil and gas.

IOA Scottish Branch have commented on consultation by the Scottish Government on proposals for the review of energy standards set through building regulations, which seek to deliver further improvement to energy efficiency of new buildings and new building work, in line with net zero ambitions.

As part of a regulatory review of the Future of Transport, UK government consulted on the Future of Flight during the autumn. The review examines areas where regulation is outdated, a barrier to innovation or not designed for new technologies or business models. For flight, potential measures to manage the emerging drone industry are examined.

Government announced in a parliamentary statement that, in England, “Wherever possible, local planning authorities should respond positively to requests for flexibility for operation of construction sites to support the sector’s recovery.”  The announcement, made on 10th December by Housing Minister Christopher Pincher, applies with immediate effect.
