Organisations like ours, across the UK, that depend on engineering and the ingenuity of engineers, will be joining the Royal Academy of Engineering to celebrate engineers and inspire the next generation about the broad world of engineering.

Against the backdrop of COP26, this year This is Engineering Day is shining a light on the engineers and engineering making a net zero future possible.

Many people are exposed to noise levels at work that may be harmful, leading to permanent and incurable hearing damage.

This third edition of Controlling noise at work (L108) is aimed at employers and other dutyholders. It includes the Control of Noise at Work Regulations alongside guidance on what they mean, setting out an employer’s legal obligations to control risks to workers’ health and safety from noise.

2020 was the International Year of Sound (IYS).  Because of the pandemic, the organisers extended the IYS to 2021.  The aims of the IYS are to highlight the importance of sound in all aspects of life on earth so that there is a greater understanding of sound-related issues at the national and international level.

During the summer UK government consulted on a strategy to reduce carbon emissions from aviation to net zero by 2050.

They asked for input on aspects of reducing emissions including system efficiencies, influencing consumers and non CO2 emissions. Overall the Institute welcomed the integrated nature of the intention of the strategy, which recognises that measures implemented to reduce CO2 emissions could affect the management of noise from aviation operations.

The Institute of Acoustics is pleased to confirm that its Bursary Fund will be open for applications from its members. The closing date for this round of funding will be midnight on the 31st October 2022.

The IOA Council has allocated £10,000 to the Bursary Fund in 2023, which it aims to use in both improving IOA members’ access to acoustics related training and activities and also assisting them in carrying-out acoustics-related STEM activities, where funding from other sources may be limited or unavailable.
