The Health and Social Costs of Road Noise

It has been estimated that the annual social cost of urban road noise in England ranges from £7 billion to £10 billion, similar to the cost of road accidents (£9 billion). The health and social costs of noise from road traffic are increasingly well documented - with research repeatedly finding that exposure to noise from road vehicles can impact.  This IOA briefing outlines the issue of road traffic noise, and potential solutions to reducing the cost of this noise to our health and society.

    Acoustics Classification of Buildings

We spend 80 – 90 of our time indoors, making the quality of indoor environments crucial to our health and well-being. Many residents still experience high levels of disruptive noise, especially in multi-dwelling buildings. Therefore, there is growing recognition of the need for a more detailed acoustic classification system that addresses these shortcomings and promotes higher standards of acoustic comfort.

    Low Frequency Noise Annoyance

Low Frequency Noise (LFN) can be an environmental noise problem. Not everyone can hear it, as our range of hearing differs, and in many cases no source can be identified. This Briefing Note looks at low frequency noise and hearing, impacts and sources, how it is investigated and managing impacts.        January 2024

Heat Pumps - Professional Advice Note

Heat pumps are part of the Government's strategy to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, the technology generates noise, and it can operate during the night and day. As a result, it has the potential to cause significant adverse effects to people living nearby. This note is intended to provide guidance for practitioners to avoid or reduce potential noise and vibration impacts from heat pumps.           November 2022

Heat Pumps - guide for potential purchasers

Heat pumps are part of the Government's strategy to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, the technology generates noise, and can operate during the night and day. As a result, it has the potential to cause significant adverse effects to people living nearby. This briefing note provides guidance for those thinking about purchasing a heat pump in order to avoid significant adverse noise impacts associated with their use. More detailed information for installers is in our practitioners note.             November 2022

    Noise from Drones

It is predicted that there could be 76,000 drones operating in the UK by 2030, with around 628,000 jobs in the drone economy . In this Briefing Note IOA consider the potential noise impact that might arise from increased drones in our skies.          May 2022
